Inaugural Project

Meet the Staff and Children of the Nokwanda Educare Centre

PYA specifically targets its efforts toward the education and development of school-aged children in Africa. Our inaugural initiative is a complete re-build of the Nokwanda Educare Centre, a pre-school or “crèche,” in the Khayelitsha township outside of Cape Town, South Africa. The centre is a vital resource that provides education, security and sometimes 24-hour care to the children in that community.

The centre operates under the most basic conditions. Toilet facilities, running water, and educational materials need updating.

The centre, established in 2011, is led by Nomthandazo Mvana, known as “Nokwanda,” an amazing woman who—with just one helper—cares for 50 children in a tiny, two-room RDP* house made of corrugated metal and cinder blocks. She’s off to a great start, but needs help to fulfill her dreams of caring for children in a facility that provides a better environment that fosters their education.

*An RDP home refers to the basic two room cinderblock homes that the South African government provides to disenfranchised Black South Africans through the Reconstruction Development Program.

In its current state, the centre is over taxed and in need of a complete rebuild to make the structure safe and more conducive to learning. Plans are underway to demolish the existing structure and rebuild the centre from the ground up into a bright, safe, fully functioning facility that will make it possible to educate twice as many children. During construction, Nokwanda and her students will be relocated to a nearby school facility.
